General Basecamp Q&A

Can we try it before we have to pay for it? What about refunds?

Yes. All new paying accounts come with a 30-day free trial (upgrades are not eligible for the 30 day free trial). Cancel before you are billed on the 30th day and your credit card won't be charged (refunds will not be issued if you do not cancel within 30 days). Get started today and try Basecamp for free. For more information on the free trial and refund policy, see this FAQ.

What about privacy, security, and confidentiality?

We take careful precautions to protect our customers' information. The Basecamp server is as secure as can reasonably be provided, and is housed in a state-of-the-art secure facility with power and internet backup (details). Your project site is password protected and we will not sell or share your information or any data you enter. No one will be able to access your data unless you grant permission. Though we offer safeguards to protect your data, please keep in mind that we can not guarantee 100% security. Take appropriate measures with your links, passwords, and user accounts. We also invite you to review our privacy policy.

What are the system requirements to use Basecamp?

Since Basecamp is hosted on our servers, there's nothing to install and no server/platform requirements to worry about. All you need is a modern web browser with Javascript turned on (Basecamp officially supports IE 6 or later on the PC, Firefox on Mac, PC, Linux, and Safari on Mac) and an internet connection. Basecamp does not support IE 5.x on the Mac or PC. If you have IE 5, we recommend switching to Firefox — it's modern, fast, compatible, and free.

Can I specify which people and clients see which projects?

Yes. Basecamp features a simple permissions system that allows you to set permission on a per-project basis. For example, if you want Susan to see only 5 out of your 13 projects, just uncheck a single checkbox on each of the projects you don't want her to see and she won't see them or be able to participate in them.

Will my Basecamp site look like my company's identity?

You can customize your Basecamp site with your company's name, colors, logo, and a URL of your choice (e.g. yourname.clientsection.com). Since the Basecamp brand name or logo isn't displayed anywhere, Basecamp is transparent to your clients — they'll think it's your own custom-built solution.

Can I get my data out if I want to discontinue using Basecamp?

Yes, you can easily export all your messages and comments in XML format at any time. If you're unhappy with the service, no hard feelings — you can cancel your account at any time from your Account page. We'll do everything we can to make the transition away from Basecamp a pleasant one.

Does Basecamp have an API?

It sure does — read all about the API.

Can we run Basecamp on our own servers?

Basecamp is a web-based, hosted service. It is not available for purchase to install on your own servers.

Do you offer a live chat solution?

Basecamp doesn't have chat built in, but we do offer Campfire group chat for business.
